Why Sustainable Urban Drainage Is Important For The Environment
One of the biggest problems with modern human civilization is that over time we ve tended to pave over and build on a lot of the surface area of the earth. This is especially troublesome in highly populated areas like cities were nearly 100% of the ground is completely covered with concrete and buildings. What this can lead to is enormous amounts of water that have no place to go, it can t soak into the ground, so it floods and creates rushing torrents of water headed towards our streams and rivers. Nature s way of dealing with excess water is to allow as much of it as possible to soak into the ground right where it lands, and the soil acts as a giant filter, where billions of algae, bacteria, fungi and other small plants and animals thrive by using the water to live on and in. After years in the ground, the water eventually filters on down to the river and back to the ocean. Let s examine some ways where humans can learn from mother nature when it comes to sustainable urban draina
